Whispers From the Tent
Where Should a Breeder Begin?
We turned to Dr. Nagel of Katharinenhof Stud in Germany
“The first step should be to spend time on a farm, in close contact with Arabian horses and to witness all that happens in the daily ritual of such a breeding place, starting for example, in the late afternoon, when the sun slowly loses its power, and all life senses the forthcoming dusk of the evening at the end of the day. At this time of day, among the 20 grazing mares at Katharinenhof Stud, a certain restlessness can be noticed. These mares drift towards the exit, their bodies impatiently pushing past each other, each wishing to be the first and to gain a good starting position for the final dash when the wide gate is opened and the way to the stables is free. The youngsters are always respectful, staying behind to leave the right of way to the older mares. Until this moment, they can be observed well spread and contentedly grazing on the stud’s 16 hectares of land, covered with fine pasture.
"At last, when both gate wings are thrust widely aside, the mares start galloping towards their stables at impressive speed. In this dash for their stables, they brilliantly exhibit all of their grace and lightness which adds to the attraction of their beauty and nobility. Their large nostrils are wide open which underlines the slightly concave shape of their small head; they carry their curved necks proudly, complementing a perfect balance to the high tail carriage. They are well aware that their stall, properly bedded with fresh straw and an armful of good hay, is waiting for them. Each mare knows her stall and seems to enjoy the exclusive comfort of her own space to the full. With a last handful of feed, the day closes and it is time to rest.”
